When
a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign -
that the dunces are all in a confederacy against him.
Jose
Mangahas Cuyegkeng, M.D., M.P.H. is such a man - - -
-
For
his uncompromising stand on Academic Excellence, marginal students
never, to say the least, like him.
-
For
his continuing concern for the good and welfare of the senior and
junior interns, the unknowing residents sabotage his program.
-
For
his untiring campaign fro meaningful changes in the curriculum,
those who are resistant to change in the faculty criticized him.
-
For
his just demand for high level of performance, the inefficient in
the faculty and employees intrigued against him.
-
For
his unyielding honesty and integrity, the unscrupulous conspired
against him.
-
For
his high sense of morality, the dishonest medical politician sued
him.
But,
Dr. Jose Cuyegkeng will be remembered......
-
For
his brilliance, eloquence and scholarly work as administrator,
teacher and pathologist .
-
For
his pioneering spirit in promoting philantrophy in medical
education and initiating the conversion of medical schools for
foundations.
-
For
organizing the Association of Philippine Medical Colleges which is
a vanguard of medical education.
-
For
laying down the foundation of the UERM College of Medicine which
made it one of the leading educational institutions for medicine
today.
-
For
putting UERM Memorial Center back on its feet when it was on the
brink of collapse.
-
For
his contribution t the legal basis of medical education and
practice of medicine and pathology.
-
For
his moral courage.
Those
who know him well will also remember his as....
-
A
true friend who always extend a needed helping hand.
-
A
highly ethical and professional person.
-
A
very compassionate and understanding man.
-
A
true Christian.
-
A
gentleman.

THE
JOSE M. CUYEGKENG MEMORIAL LECTURE (USA)
B. G. LUMICAO, M.D. UERMMMC '61
It is with great respect an a sense of pride that the University
of the East Medical Alumni Association - USA presents this lecture
as a memorial to JOSE M. CUYEGKENG, M.D.
To those among us who had the good fortune and privilege to be under
his tutelage, we recall with fondness his many accomplishments and
fine qualities. He was an outstanding physician, administrator,
and educator. As a physician he was unique i being an astute
clinician as well as an accomplished pathologist. He was
successful administrator as well, demonstrated by his performance as
Dean of the College of Medicine and as President of the University of
the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center.
In the classroom he was a superb teacher. We all remember him as
a stern disciplinarian who demanded proper decorum and proper
deportment in and out of the classroom. He was eloquent
speaker who articulated very well his brilliant ideas and
philosophies. He had the courage to stand up for his
convictions.
While his attention and efforts were mainly directed towards the
welfare of the University of the East College of Medicine, he was
broadminded enough to look beyond the confines of the institution and
concerned himself with the state of medical education in the
Philippines in general. He organized and became the Founding
President of the Association of Philippine Medical Colleges.
We have been most fortunate to be exposed to many outstanding faculty
members at our alma mater, but no one has influenced our lives as much
as Dr. Jose M. Cuyegkeng. He inspired us to reach for greater
heights of success by his demand for excellence and by his
example. He inculcated in us good sense of values. For all
these, we dedicate this lecture in his memory as an expression of our
gratitude, love, respect and admiration.
Bestowing the honor of the lectureship upon Dr. Emmanuel L. Bravo is
in recognition of his brilliant career in the basic and clinical
investigation of hypertension as well as his many other
achievements. In a sense, it is another tribute to the inspiring
influence of Dr. Jose M. Cuyegkeng on his former students.
